About me

Lucia Sala Simion was raised and educated in Italy and France. She grew up in Neuilly-sur-Seine (Paris), a stone’s throw from the house of Commander Jean-Baptiste Charcot, Antarctic and Arctic explorer. After getting a degree in medicine summa cum laude, Lucia became a science journalist and a science writer. She obtained the Graduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies at Gateway Antarctica – University of Canterbury, Christchurch – New Zealand. Lucia has taken part in ten expeditions to Antarctica, one to Greenland (with the NSF at the NEEM drilling camp) and she visited ten subantarctic islands. She is the author of two books and many reportages on the polar and subantarctic regions. Lucia Sala Simion has been a member of the TAAF Advisory Board (Terres australes et antarctiques françaises) from 2009 to 2016.She is a polar guide and a speaker.

Sono un giornalista professionista e divulgatore scientifico freelance esperto di Antartide, delle isole subantartiche e dell’Artico, autore del volume “Antartide, Cuore bianco della Terra” (Giunti, 2007), dell’opera per ragazzi “A’ la rencontre des animaux des pôles” e di molti reportages. Ho partecipato alla XVI-XVII-XVIII-XXIII spedizione del PNRA, al progetto ANDRILL SMS, al progetto NEEM in Groenlandia (nel 2011), alla 56a spedizione di SANAP a Gough e sono madrina della TA50, la 50a spedizione in Terre Adélie a DDU. Sono anche guida polare e conferenziere per spedizioni turistiche in Antartide e nelle isole subantartiche. Ho tradotto in italiano e in francese i posters del progetto Flexibit-ANDRILL SMS, in collaborazione con l’University of Nebraska State Museum; i posters sono stati utilizzati in molte scuole a scopo didattico. Tengo conferenze in istituti scolastici, università, fondazioni e a bordo delle navi della compagnia Ponant,con cui collaboro. Sono nata a Milano e cresciuta fra l’Italia e la Francia. Laureata in Medicina con Lode,
ho ottenuto un Graduate Certificate in Antarctic Studies all’Università di Canterbury,Christchurch, Nuova Zelanda e sono diplomata del Corso ERCA all’Università di Grenoble. Dal 2009 al 2016 sono stata membro del Consiglio Consultativo delle Terre australi e antartiche francesi (TAAF), di cui ho visitato tutti i distretti: Crozet, Kerguelen, Amsterdam, le isole Éparses e la Terre Adélie.

About me

Lucia Sala Simion was raised and educated in Italy and France. After getting a degree in medicine, Lucia became a science journalist and a science writer. She has taken part in eight expeditions to Antarctica and one to Greenland (to cover the NEEM project); she visited ten subantarctic islands. Her dream is to make a winter-over in Antarctica.
